The Macomb Police Department now has a prescription medicine drop off box located in the lobby of the Macomb Police Department. The drop off box is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Citizens do not have to wait for a special day to drop off prescription medicine, now they can just come to the Police Department any time and drop off their unused prescription medicine in the box.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
The box has information on it that tells citizens what they can and cannot dispose of in the box. The Macomb Police Department encourages the community to dispose of prescription medicine responsibly and to use our box to do it.
