On Friday, July 8th, 2016 Walmart employees recovered empty packaging for several BB guns from inside the store. After reviewing video footage, employees learned the theft occurred the previous day during two separate incidents and involved several juveniles. Understanding the implications of the look-alike firearms, employees immediately notified police and provided a detailed description of the juveniles and stolen merchandise.
Officers quickly worked together and established a connection between the juveniles in the surveillance footage and an incident the evening before where a BB gun was removed by officers from the waistband of a juvenile in the Prairieview Public Housing Complex. Several of the juveniles involved were identified and officers began attempting to locate them in an effort to recover the look-alike weapons and prevent any more incidents.
With the assistance of several concerned parents, all juveniles involved were identified and five look-alike BB guns were recovered within approximately 24 hours after the incident was reported to police.
The realism and detail of the BB guns could have created a serious incident. The Macomb Police Department would like to extend their deep appreciation to the public for their assistance in resolving this matter.
