On Tuesday, May 10th, 2016, ten explorers were honored for their achievements during the 2015-2016 academic year at the Macomb Police Explorers’ Annual awards ceremony.
Explorer of the Year Award
Explorer Sergeant Renata Sturlic received the post’s highest honor, Explorer of the Year. Sturlic, who has been in the explorer program for two years, serves as both a squad leader and the post secretary. Sturlic, a sophomore at Macomb High School, distinguished herself from her peers through her dependability, attitude, attendance, and dedication to the community, department, and program. During the 2015-2016 academic year, Sturlic logged over 100 hours of time dedicated to the program through volunteer work and scheduled post events. Sturlic also dedicated her own time outside of the program to assist new explorers in preparing for the explorer intramural explorer competition held on April 23rd. Sturlic currently supervises six explorers within the program through her role as sergeant. Her enthusiasm, maturity, and dedication has distinguished her as a leader amongst her peers.
The explorer tenure award is presented to explorers who complete one year of satisfactory service within the explorer post. This award was presented to Explorer Captain Michael Mueller, Explorer Sergeants Renata Sturlic and Steven Huffman, Explorers Michael Clark, Brandon Morgan, and Courtney Neavear.
Perfect Attendance Award
The perfect attendance award is presented to explorers who attend each scheduled post meeting and activity during the academic year. This year Explorer Captain Michael Mueller received the award.
Physical Fitness Award
Physical fitness is a critical component within the field of law enforcement and the Macomb Police Department takes pride in recognizing explorers who maintain a high level of physical readiness. Law Enforcement recruits within the State of Illinois must successfully take and pass the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R.) Test prior to being appointed as a police officer. The P.O.W.E.R. test consists of the following events: bench press, sit and reach, sit-ups, and a mile and a half run. Explorer Post #4044 offers post members the opportunity to take the P.O.W.E.R. test on a volunteer basis and awards the physical fitness ribbon to any explorer who can achieve the standard as set forth in by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. This year the physical fitness ribbon was awarded to Explorer Captain Michael Mueller and Explorer Sergeant Steven Huffman.
Squad Intramural Competition
On Saturday, April 23rd, 2016, explorers competed in an intramural competition between the two squads. The competition was a culminating event for the academic year and required explorers to apply many of the skills they learned throughout the year. The competition consisted of six events: a P.O.W.E.R test, report writing, a domestic violence response scenario, traffic stop scenarios, a neighborhood watch presentation, and a parade operations plan. Squads had two explorers perform in each event and point totals were assigned; a total of 240 points were possible. The winning squad scored a total of 212 points and consisted of Steven Huffman, Kevin Clouston, Samuel Newill, and Erbin Zejnuloski. These explorers were presented with a pin they are now authorized to wear on their uniform for a period of one year.
Letters of Commendation
Explorer Kevin Clouston was presented with a Leadership Award Certificate in recognition of his enthusiasm, knowledge, mentorship, compassion, and willingness to help others. Hunter Briggs was presented with the Most Improved Explorer Certificate in recognition of his outstanding achievement and improvement within the field of law enforcement during the 2015-2016 academic year.
