What is a Citizen Police Academy?
The CPA is ten week instructional course held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Participants will get to know their police department, express their views, and have hands on practical exercises to let the citizen experience activities conducted by police officers. This course will provide citizens with a basic knowledge of all aspects of the police profession.
***One Citizen Police Academy Class is held each Spring and Fall semester. Our next class begins on Thursday, September 7th, 2017 and runs until Thursday, November 16th.
Why is Macomb PD providing this course to the public?
The implementation of the MPD Citizen Police Academy is a significant step toward achieving the following goals:
- To better inform the public about the police department and related law enforcement practices, issues and concerns.
- To enhance bilateral communications with the community by enhancing the public’s knowledge on how, with whom, and when to communicate with the police department.
- Establish a trained group of individuals with a strong sense of citizen responsibility in the community supported with information on crime prevention and neighborhood crime repression.
- Create an important group of police supporters and contacts in the community that can be utilized in a number of situations both in terms of proactive as well as reactive police initiatives.
Where is it being held?
The course is being held on Thursday evenings at the Macomb Police Department Training Room, with the exception of an optional Saturday scheduled for practicals at the firearms range at Spring Lake.
Who instructs the classes and what do they teach?
Macomb Police Officers along with representatives from other agencies instruct classes that are related to their respective fields.
Is there a fee to attend?
No, there are no fees to attend the course.
Do I graduate?
There will be a graduation. Citizens who complete the course will receive a certificate of achievement. No tests are administered.
Will I be trained to make arrests?
No, but you will be educated on crime prevention and what your options are concerning arrest procedures.
How do I sign up to attend?
You must be 18 years of age or older, work or live in Macomb, or attend school in Macomb. You must also complete an application and liability waiver.
Will I be notified whether accepted or not?
Yes, but keep in mind that class sizes (~20) and the number of academies are limited to two per year. If you don’t make the upcoming academy, your application will be kept in the order it was received.
